For more than two decades, Shakesperience has inspired middle and high school students to spontaneously perform Shakespeare in their classrooms. For nearly a decade, we’ve annually persuaded civic leaders of all stripes to do the same for fun and the benefit of our educational programming. This year, instead of Shakespeare, we’re highlighting our Neighborhoods! Program, as we present Waterbury history, neighborhood by neighborhood, in Chase Collegiate School’s storied St. Margaret’s Hall. Our audience will enjoy wine and dinner as auctions, scenes and songs break out all around them to celebrate the history of the Brass City. Will you see your favorite community leaders as Rosalind Russell, President Kennedy, Carrie Welton, Roger Connor, William Scovill, or the Leatherman? You won’t want to miss it!
Shakesperience has grown the Neighborhoods! Program for seven years, writing scripts and songs for two Waterbury neighborhoods annually. It’s a multi-generational humanities program that records oral histories for lifelong learners at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, converting them into scenes, poetry, song, and multimedia presentations. Simultaneously, we provide prospective for (and give voices to) the young people in neighborhoods throughout the Brass City. Involving a cast of professionals, students and older adults, Neighborhoods brings stories of Waterbury to life.
